As The Weather Warms, Archery Ranges Heat Up

All Things Archery

The weather is warm and the outdoor ranges are open and in full action. For those archers who have been anxiously waiting to get onto the field and outdoor target ranges, I hope you have your sights tuned in.

At the Archery Center, we have three Field Ranges which are 28 targets each. These ranges are located behind the building, back in the wooded area. Field ranges are set up similar to a golf course. Each target is a different distance and has varying elevations or challenges. Making your way through one of the ranges can take up to 4 hours if you are shooting with a group. If you are a target archer and interested in learning more about field archery, call the Archery Center and we can assist you in getting started.

Volunteers, we love our volunteers at the Archery Center. Having 807 unique volunteers for the Youth World was unprecedented in Yankton and we are offering more opportunities for this summer. Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about archery, we can teach you everything that you need to know. We are looking for older youth or adults to assist with the youth summer activities, Try Archery, Ribfest and tournaments. The opportunities are both inside and outside and vary in level of physical activity. As before, we will make sure that you are well suited for the volunteer activity. Call Nancy or Jos for more details 260-9282.

As a way to expose youth to archery, we are offering a drop-in rate for our Beginners Class for the rest of May and all of June. Classes are Tuesday’s from 4-5:30 p.m. You can attend any class for $7 and we provide you all the necessary equipment. If you want to sign up for the rest of the session for $45, as an added benefit you receive a membership during that time to the Archery Center which allows you to come and shoot anytime you want for FREE! If your kids, ages 8-13, have taken Try Archery or had basic instruction in the past, these classes are a fun way to spend more time on the range playing games and making new friends. Call the Archery Center for more details.

• First Dakota Classic June 10-12

This event is the last leg of the NFAA’s 3 Star Tour which include the Vegas Shoot and Indoor Nationals in Kentucky. The best archers from all over the US will be competing for thousands of dollars in prize money including a $10,000 shoot-off Saturday evening for professional and amateur archers that competed in all three Tour events. The format of this tournament also allows for a spectator friendly component, with head-to-head elimination matches on Sunday for archers competing for prize money. This is a great opportunity for the community to see a different element of competitive archery.

• High Performance Youth Compound Academy June 13-16

The fourth annual Youth Compound Academy brings together some of the best coaches and professional archers in the country for four days to work with up and coming youth archers looking to improve their competitive game. Archers, ages 12-18, from California to Maine travel to Yankton to learn from the best in the sport.

• Midwest Outdoor Sectionals June 18-19

This field event is an opportunity for archers from the seven Midwest states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri to compete in an outdoor golf-course style archery tournament. This is a fun and challenging event that is open to youth and adult archers that enjoy the outdoors.

We appreciate our partnership with the City of Yankton Parks and Recreation department and are proud to offer a variety of activities onsite for youth this summer (compound archery, recurve archery, air rifle, trap shooting and shooting sports). There are still spots available in some of the classes so check out the menu of activities

• Try Archery: If you are interested in learning the basics and having some fun, then this is the class for you. Every Saturday (except during major tournament weekends) from 11 a.m.12:30 p.m., there is a learning session that will teach you safety, range rules, and the basics of shooting. This class is open to all ages and only $5 per person. No pre-registration is necessary so grab a couple of friends and come experience something new.

The NFAA staff just returned from the Marked 3D Target Nationals in Redding, California. This was the 22nd annual event drawing more than 1,200 people for three days of exciting competition. What makes this tournament unique is it is one of the largest 3D events in the country where archers get to shoot at an impressive zoo of foam targets shaped like various game animals, big and small.

The Archery Zone at Memorial Park during Ribfest will be open June 4 from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., pending City Commission approval. We are excited to be a part of this community event.

We are looking forward to sharing archery news and activities at both the Community Forum and Interchange in the coming month. If your group would like to hear more about archery and the great things happening at the Archery Center, call to schedule a date. We are excited to do presentations to groups at your meeting location or we could possibly host your group at the Archery Center, providing you a tour of the facility, time in the museum and participating in a shooting activity.
