2010 Initiative Meeting to Be Held Today

An 2010 Initiative meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area Welcome Center west of Yankton.

It's part of a series of meetings spotlighting South Dakota business development, tourism and quality-of-life success stories. It is sponsored by the state Department of Tourism and State Development.

The Yankton meeting will focus on the relocation of the National Field Archery Association Headquarters to Yankton. In a partnership between Yankton and the Governor's Office of Economic Development, Yankton became the new headquarters of the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) and the Easton Sports Development Foundation Center for Excellence in Archery (ESDF). A new 22,000 square-foot facility includes permanent ranges for Olympic archery games, field archery and 3-D simulated hunting. A 25-meter indoor range will be open to the public all year. The NFAA in partnership with other archery organizations hold various tournaments in Yankton each year, drawing visitors to Yankton from across the United States and around the World. In 2009, 49 different states and 12 countries traveled to Yankton to compete in tournaments at the new archery facility.

The initiative, launched in 2003 by Gov. Mike Rounds and the people of this state, outlines a series of specific goals for economic growth and visitor spending in South Dakota. As part of that effort, state officials go on the road each year to connect with communities, report on the status of the 2010 goals, and receive input on how the state can continue to promote the initiative.

Success meetings are also being held in Aberdeen, Chamberlain-Oacoma, Lead, Madison, Mobridge, Sioux Falls and Sturgis.

The public is invited to attend.
